Yesterday we traveled to a Buddhist Temple at a park overlooking Nanning. Kavanna wouldn't let anyone else touch her or hold her. She was inconsolable and anxious, as she's been since she was put into our arms on Monday afternoon. On our daily walk around People's Park, however, David taught her how to "high-five" and they "high-fived" their way around the park. Kavanna burst into laughter and we got to see her smiley, happy self. She's slowly coming out of her shell as she trusts us.
The Chinese people have been lovely, gathering around us when we walk in the park and waving, smiling, giving us thumbs up about Kavanna. We've been trying out our rudimentary Mandarin and some of them speak a bit of English, so we've been able to communicate a little bit. We've gotten some disapproving (we think) stares from older people, but generally the response has been warm and positive and interested.
One more day in Nanning and then it's off to Guangzhou.

i think i've been logging in on your blog every 10 mins or so. Nina and David - you have two beautiful daughters. Ariel - you already look like a doting older sister and Kavanna, get ready for a lot of love and kisses

I just love following your blog. Ariel and Kavanna seem to have connected...fantastic! And David "high five-ing" her everywhere. It seems that every member of you family is connecting with Kavanna. Fabulous!
I think the 'high five' is an international gesture for 'rock on'. JMei learned it early on and now dreams of becoming the next Hanna Montana. She also does 'knuckles' and prefers it to shaking hands.
Guangzhou will be pleasant. Travel tip: avoid having laundry done at WS - it's WWAAYY expensive. The little shop right outside the WS lobby has good service and reasonable pricing.
It is warming to hear the connecting/bonding stories. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to eavesdrop on your journey.

Reliving those fragile first days as you begin to bond with Kavanna. I can't tell you how much I've thought about what our children have gone through as I've experienced culture shock here. I had none of that on the adoption trip. When you move here it's a whole different thing. Bless their hearts, it's a huge shock for them. Amazingly they can become stronger because of it. May she be wrapped in mercy and feel peace as she begins to know how much you all love her and that everything is going to be alright (and actually wonderful : ) I think the White Swan and baby island will be uplifting for all of you.
You are all so sweet together! Why so long in Nanning, do you know?

Hey, I am so glad to see everything is going so well. Love the pics of Kavanna and Aerial! Ahhh...sisters. Would love to see video of David and Kavanna "high five-ing"! Enjoy GZ. The White Swan is much nicer than the Majestic. And the food will be better too. ; ) Make sure to get the olive or tomato toast at The Deli Shop.
